Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 cup of butter
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 4 1/2 cups of flour

Frosting

  • 4 cups (or 1 pound) of powdered sugar
  • 1 cup of butter, (Softened Salted Sweet Cream)
  • 23 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons of milk, or enough to get frosting spreadable

Instructions

Cookies

      1. Mix
        Cream butter and sugar together.
      2. Add vanilla, milk & soda. Eggs (one at a time), salt, cream of tartar, 3 cups of flour – slowly.
      3. Add enough more flour to make the dough able to be rolled.
      4. Chill
        Chill for an hour at least.
      5. Roll and shape
        Roll dough out on floured cookie sheet. Try not to add too much flour when rolling.
      6. Cut out shapes.
      7. Bake
        Bake at 400 for about 6 minutes. Don’t over bake. Let sit on baking sheet for a few minutes before removing to rake to cool. Frost and decorate once cooled.

Frosting

    1. Add softened butter and vanilla to the mixing bowl and mix until completely combined.
    2. Add Powdered Sugar and beat on low until it is incorporated. Then move mixer up to medium-high speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.
    3. Add milk a little bit at a time until frosting is the proper consistency.

Notes

Cookies will set up once frosting dries a bit and get softer and tastier. They should be eaten within  2-3 days. Unfrosted cookies can be frozen and frosted at a later date.
