For those of you interested in authentic Limbourgian Belgian cuisine! This is a popular local dish in the South of the Netherlands, as well as the Flemish part of Belgium. The meat becomes wonderfully soft by soaking it in vinegar overnight. I know it sounds odd, but be ready for an authentic European-style dish and you will love it! Some of the ingredients might be difficult to get in the U.S. Adding the spiced bread, the sandwich and rubbing the meat with flour adds a great taste to the stew and thickens the fluid. Tastes great with fries.
I’m a big fan of bone marrow in the winter. Combined with the turnip it gives you that comforting-feel-good warm feeling, just perfect to get through a cold grey winter day.
One of my old standby real comfort food recipes. Very easy to make, and the combination of the flavors of the caramelized onions and beer give it a very subtle, complex rich taste without giving it a lot of extra calories. Great with rice, mashed potatoes or noodles and a simple green vegetable.
Picnic like the French with a perfectly ripe Camembert, some garlicky sausage and a fresh, crusty baguette – eh voila! No need to go outside for a picnic, if the weather is inclement; enjoy a picnic in your kitchen at the kitchen table, or use the cheese platter as a centrepiece for parties, fêtes, cocktails or social gatherings! Lay a tartan rug on the table and use wicker baskets or a hamper if you wish………..be as “rustique” or as “chic” as you want to be! Great for Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year, as well as for a summer picnics of course!
From Ruth Van Waerebeek’s “Everybody Eats Well in Belgium Cookbook.” A simple-to-make, delicious spaghetti dinner — and nicely different from the traditional spaghetti and meatballs. Here, the thick sauce is loaded with vegetables and ground beef (or try ground turkey for a leaner version.) The Gruyère cheese is worth the extra cost; it makes all the difference. I like the extra Tabasco, too. I usually double or triple, and freeze the extra for another meal or two later in the week. This dish, a couple of bottles of wine, and some friends… you got yourself a nice, casual dinner party.
