Ingredients

Cake

  • 2/3 cup of shortening
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1 2/3 cups of granulated sugar
  • 3 egg(s)
  • 2 2/3 cup of flour
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups of chopped walnuts

Creamy Caramel Frosting

  • 1/3 cup of heavy cream
  • 6 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 3 cups of powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat
    Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease and flour pans.
  2. Whisk
    Whisk together dry ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Cream
    Cream together sugar, butter and shortening until light and fluffy – about 10 minutes.
  4. Mix in eggs, one at a time until well combined.
  5. Combine
    Gradually mix together dry and wet mixes – alternating with milk until well mixed. Mix in vanilla.
  6. Bake
    Pour into prepared pans.
  7. If baking in 2 pans for layers, bake 25-30 minutes. If baking one solid cake, bake for 35-40 minutes. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
  8. Make the frosting
    Heat together butter and cream until scalding.
  9. Caramelize sugar in a sauce pan. Add scalded cream and butter mix. Stir until smooth and lumps are dissolved.
  10. Gradually stir in powdered sugar and beat until smooth. If too thick, add more cream until desired consistency.
