Ingredients

  • 6 medium Gala apples, cored and chopped into thick chunks (I leave the peels on)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon cloves (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla paste or 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. Prepare the apples : In a large bowl, toss the chopped apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and vanilla extract until the apples are well-coated. Transfer the apples to the prepared baking dish, spreading them out evenly.

  3. Make the crisp topping : In another bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the melted butter into the mixture and stir until it forms a crumbly texture.

  4. Assemble : Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples.

  5. Bake : Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. (35-40 minutes)

  6. Serve : Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. It pairs beautifully with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
