Ingredients

  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of shortening
  • 3/4 cup of molasses
  • 1 cup of water, boiling
  • 1 cup of water, cold
  • 6 1/2 cups of flour
  • 2 tablespoons of yeast, dry
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water, warm

Instructions

  1. Whisk Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 10 mins or until frothy.

  2. Add Add oatmeal, salt, shortening, and molasses. DO NOT STIR.

  3. Pour Add boiling water to loosen and stir, then add cold water and mix until well combined.

  4. Stir in yeast.

  5. Knead Add half of flour and knead dough until incorporated. Gradually add remaining flour, continuing to knead for 10 minutes or until dough is elastic and not sticky

  6. Seperate Separate dough into 4 pieces, round each one and place 2 rounds into greased bread pans.

  7. Prove Allow to rise once until doubled in size (about 1 hr).

  8. Preheat Toward the end of the proving - preheat the oven to 350 F

  9. Bake Bake at 350F for 40-45 mins.

  10. Brush Brush with butter while hot to keep shiny.

  11. Cool Allow to cool for 1 hour before slicing and serving.

Makes 2 loaves or 24 rolls
