The original version of this recipe was found at Britain Express. For many generations wives in Corwall would make these ‘Hot Pockets’ of meat and vegetables, often leftovers from the previous nights supper for their miner, dock worker, etc. husbands to take to work for their noon meal. This recipe represents the traditional recipe when it was made from scratch. This recipe is not made with puff pastry but with a simple pie crust which the British call ‘shortcrust pastry’. If you wish to cut corners you can use premade refrigerated pie crusts from the supermarket.

This is a gorgeous, mellow sandwich filler I have discovered in Britain and got absolutely hooked on! It’s a very savoury and cheesy filling with a lovely melt-in-the-mouth texture which makes it the ultimate comfort food. Attention – some people my find this quite smelly, but it’s worth it!
This is a Mature Cheddar and Chutney Sandwich, just one of the sandwiches sold under the “Ploughman’s Lunch” heading listed on pub menu’s in Great Britain. Bloomer Bread is a chewy, dense bread that is made with very long rising times to develop the flavor of the wheat and the yeast.
A bacon sandwich is a very British breakfast. This is my favourite version of it. The type of bacon to use is back bacon, not the typical American streaky bacon. Everyone has their favourite version of this recipe- this is just my take on a classic! My nephew is a picky eater and this sandwich was his first ever taste of bacon! To make this Weight Watchers friendly, I sometimes use the bacon medallions that have the fat trimmed off- if using these, reduce the cooking time so they don’t dry out. This is also excellent served in a white roll with a fried egg.
