Nan’s Brown Bread

- 1 cup of oatmeal
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 2 tablespoons of shortening
- 3/4 cup of molasses
- 1 cup of water, boiling
- 1 cup of water, cold
- 6 1/2 cups of flour
- 2 tablespoons of yeast, dry
- 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water, warm
Instructions

WhiskCombine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 10 mins or until frothy.

AddAdd oatmeal, salt, shortening, and molasses. DO NOT STIR.

PourAdd boiling water to loosen and stir, then add cold water and mix until well combined.

Stir in yeast.

KneadAdd half of flour and knead dough until incorporated. Gradually add remaining flour, continuing to knead for 10 minutes or until dough is elastic and not sticky

SeperateSeparate dough into 4 pieces, round each one and place 2 rounds into greased bread pans.

ProveAllow to rise once until doubled in size (about 1 hr).

PreheatToward the end of the proving – preheat the oven to 350 F

BakeBake at 350F for 40-45 mins.

BrushBrush with butter while hot to keep shiny.

CoolAllow to cool for 1 hour before slicing and serving.
