Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ground
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves
  • 1 cup of water, hot

Instructions

  1. Preheat Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour 9 inch square pan

  2. Cream Cream together the sugar and butter. Add egg and beat well. Mix in the molasses.

  3. Whisk dry ingredients Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and clove.

  4. Combine Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Add the hot water. Mix well.

  5. Pour Pour batter into pan

  6. Bake Bake for 60-70 mins. Start checking with a toothpick in the center around 50 minutes. Foil top if it darkens too much.

  7. Cool and serve Allow to cool in pan and serve with copious amounts of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
