Make old-fashioned pear butter without added sugar in your slow cooker: just pears, cinnamon, vanilla. Cook 18-24 hours for a rich, thick spread. Yields 5 pints.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds of pear(s), mixed variety
  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pears Wash the pears thoroughly. Do not peel them, as the natural pectin in the skins will aid in thickening the butter.

  2. Core the pears and cut them into chunks.

  3. Place the pear chunks into a 6-quart Crock Pot.

  4. Sprinkle the cinnamon and vanilla extract over the pears.

  5. Cook Set the Crock Pot to low heat. If the lid doesn't fit tightly initially, don't worry, it will settle as it cooks.

  6. Allow the mixture to cook for 18 to 24 hours. The longer it cooks, the darker it will become. If you prefer a lighter color or taste, you can check it after 12 hours.

  7. Once cooked to your desired consistency and color, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  8. Blend Blend the mixture until smooth using an immersion blender or transfer to a blender in batches.

  9. Can Pour the pear butter into sterilized jars, leaving some headspace at the top.

  10. Seal the jars according to proper canning procedures or store in the refrigerator for immediate use.
